Oliver Olwyn, LCSW, CSAT, SEP

Oliver Olwyn is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker who has been a psychotherapist since 2009. He brings a unique blend of personal and professional experience to his practice — including more than two decades in recovery himself.

LCSW CSAT — Certified Sex Addiction Therapist SEP — Somatic Experiencing Practitioner RAE — Rainbow Advocacy and Educator

From South Africa to New York

Before moving to the United States, Oliver provided individual and group counseling for students and teachers suffering from trauma during the Apartheid years in South Africa — working across language barriers with music, puppets, and performance art. He immigrated to the United States in 1994 and put himself through college with no support or resources, and that early work — meeting people where they are, in whatever language reaches them — still shapes how he practices today.

How Oliver works

Treatment methods include Somatic Experiencing, the Task-Centered Model (Patrick Carnes), and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy — with humor, connection, and recovery tools like gratitude lists, supportive networks, and building self-esteem. Oliver works with addicts and their betrayed partners, guiding them through the healing process of recovery, and with clients of all sexual orientations and gender identities.

Self-soothing through sex or other behaviors can become a self-made prison, shrinking one's world into isolation, despair, or dysfunctional relationships.

His specialties are sex addiction, trauma, and substance and alcohol abuse, along with the anxiety and depression that often coexist with addiction and arise from traumatic events. He also helps clients navigate dating, relationships, and healthy sexuality in a hypersexualized culture.

“Let me help you explore your goals and how we can map out your journey toward a life beyond your wildest dreams. You think that's overreaching? It's not. I have seen this happen with so many people, and it can manifest with you.”

What Clients Say

At first I was skeptical seeing a therapist but quickly felt that Oliver genuinely cared, making it easy to truly let my guard down. I wouldn't be where I am today without him.

I have been working with Oliver for 4 years. His approach is pragmatic and comprehensive. He's also helped my teenage daughter and husband work through some fears and issues, which makes him a great asset for our family. I highly recommend him!

Unlike previous therapists, Oliver gave me hope despite my addiction and bipolar disorder. I have maintained my sobriety and feel so much happier.
