Substance & Alcohol Abuse Therapy in New York City

Alcoholism and substance abuse bring powerlessness and unmanageability — and a life that keeps getting smaller. Recovery opens the other direction: toward a life beyond your wildest dreams.

How Oliver works with substance and alcohol abuse

Oliver brings more than two decades in recovery himself, alongside his professional training as a Licensed Clinical Social Worker. His approach combines:

  • Somatic Experiencing (Peter Levine): learning the language of the body and how to dissipate distress at its roots.
  • The Task-Centered Model (Patrick Carnes): a step-by-step journey toward long-term sobriety.
  • Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, humor, and connecting with others.

Recovery tools, one day at a time

Day-to-day recovery is built on practical tools: gratitude lists, creating a supportive network, building self-esteem, unravelling problems, building spiritual connection, staying present, and letting go of resentments. Oliver helps clients develop an increased ability to handle life events that used to feel overwhelming.

Often connected: addiction, trauma, and mood

Substance and alcohol abuse rarely travel alone. Oliver also treats the anxiety and depression that often coexist with addiction and arise from traumatic events, and the sex addiction that frequently overlaps with substance use — addressing the whole picture rather than one symptom at a time.
